BENEFITS OF INSTALLING A RESIDENTIAL EV CHARGER

As exciting as owning an electric car may be, the limited range of most models can make it difficult to go on long trips. If you live in or near Temecula, you may be able to charge your car for trips around the city, but what if you want to visit Las Vegas or go on a long road trip with the family to Big Bear? Having a charger installed in your home can ensure that your car is juiced up and ready to go without having to find a business or public charging station.

THE INSTALLATION PROCESS

Charging your electric vehicle is not as simple as plugging your car into an ordinary wall outlet. Most electric cars require a level of electricity that most homes do not have. If you want to charge your car at home, you will need an electrician to come out and upgrade your electrical panel and wiring, making sure your home’s system is up to code and ready to handle the increased demands of your vehicle.

Before the installation can begin, we’ll go over your options. There are many EV chargers on the market, and each have their own advantages:

  • Level 1 chargers: These use a standard 120-volt wall outlet. They are the slowest method of charging, but they require the least amount of equipment. Every electric vehicle comes with a Level 1 charger.
  • Level 2 chargers: These chargers require installation of a specific charging station and a 240-volt electrical source. They charge a vehicle much faster than Level 1 chargers.
  • DC fast chargers: Also known as Level 3 chargers, these require a 480-volt electrical source and can charge an EV up to 80% in about 30 minutes. However, they are not typically recommended for home use due to their high-power requirements and cost.

Additionally, there are different types of connectors used by these chargers like J1772 connector or Tesla connector for Level 1 and 2, and SAE Combined Charging System (CCS), CHAdeMO, and Tesla for DC fast chargers. Please note that the compatibility of these chargers can vary based on the type of electric vehicle you own.
